With memory on (Settings > Personalization > Memory), ChatGPT automatically remembers useful context from your chats — your name, preferences, ongoing projects — and carries it into future conversations so you do not repeat yourself. You can review it in the memory summary, edit entries by typing in the box, or tell it to remember something directly in chat.

Memory persists across separate chats and even survives deleting the chat it came from — the memory "notepad" is stored separately from history. To fully forget something, delete it from the memory summary and from every source it appears in, including past chats and files.
