It is the keyboard-first way to pin which capability ChatGPT uses for the next message. The + tools button in the composer opens the same set.

Which entries appear depends on your plan, region, and app version, so a tool a coworker has may not show for you. If Search or Deep research is missing from the menu, it likely is not enabled for your account yet.
